What is “Authentic” Assessment?

Chambers, Julia

Edutopia. (2011, February 9). What is “authentic” assessment? [Web log post]. Retrieved from http://www.edutopia.org/stw-assessment-school-of-the-future-introduction-video

This short video covers the basics on what authentic assessment strives to do for students:
  • create learning opportunities that mimic real-life tasks/jobs, which adds meaning
  • increase students’ engagement/interest level
  • design synthesis tasks, which promote/stretch students’ critical thinking skills
  • strive for true understanding vs. learning required content only
To enact authentic assessment, educators at School of the Future, in Manhattan, recommend backward planning. This starts by identifying The Big Idea they want students to walk away with, identifying how they will know that students have “gotten it, and then creating projects, assignments, tasks that will get students there.

Evaluation: This video offers a nice overview of authentic learning if you’re unfamiliar with the term, as I was. Authentic assessment goes hand-in-hand with project-based learning, learning by design, and inquiry-based learning.

  1. Yes, Yes, Yes... It's not about the test... It's about the task... Can they master the task at hand. Can they use the task later? Do they remember what it is. It's not the test.... It's what they are capable of doing...
