The Fifth C - Connections

Engelbrecht, Shannon

IL

OWEN, D. (2013). Another "C" for Learning. Teacher Librarian, 40(5), 38-42.

Summary: In the article, the author succinctly states, "Framework for 21st Century Learning by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills states that there are "four Cs" that are critical learning and innovation skills: communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. ... I believe very strongly that making connections could easily be considered a fifth C. Not only is there a workplace imperative for students to learn how to make connections, but there is also scientific evidence that making connections is how we learn best." The article uses examples of students learning to make connections, as well as research supporting each assertion. Then, the article goes on to make specific best-practice recommendations for teacher librarians.

Evaluation: Most articles either advocate for a theoretical position, such as connections being the "fifth C" or they describe concrete practices. This article blends the two in a persuasive, practical manner that is a pleasure to read.
