Coffey, H. (2008). Critical literacy. Retrieved from http://www.learnnc.org/lp/pages/4437
Summary: Critical
literacy is the ability to read texts in an active, reflexive manner in order
to better understand power, inequality, and injustice in human relationships.
In this article, the author talks about the history and theory of critical
literacy, critical literacy in practice, critical literacy and social action,
and critical literacy in the classroom.
Evaluation: I had
not heard of critical literacy before, but this article does a really good job
in explaining how important it is. I found that the section on critical
literacy in the classroom and the classroom applications thereafter was the
most helpful and interesting. They had some interesting ideas to offer to
teachers, and I think it’s something that would be extremely beneficial and
interesting to students.
