G & Johnson, M. (1980). Excerpts from Metaphors
we live by. Chicago: University of Chicago Press.
Summary: This article is about how the mind makes meaning through
the use of metaphors. Ultimately, metaphors can shape our perceptions
and actions. For example, we make meaning and
understand new information through familiarity with known subjects. And in the
realm of teaching and learning, this article is useful for developing a lesson
plan for students to learn new concepts. By using helpful metaphors, it can aid
students in learning and understanding new information.
Evaluation/Opinion:
It is interesting how we tend to interpret the world and make meaning by the
use of metaphors. Since metaphors structure our most basic understandings of
our experiences, it makes sense to use this technique through teaching and
learning. I think that by understanding how we think and how we express our
thoughts in language, it can help us effectively develop a well rounded lesson
plan for students. I highly recommend this book.
