Harmeyer, Dave.2014. "Skateboards, Katy Perry and Sola Scriptura." Reference Librarian

55, no. 3: 262-267. Academic Search Complete, EBSCOhost

Summary - This is a story from a column that shares reference interview stories and a reference librarian's perspective.  This anecdote shares an often experienced scenario of students at the reference desk seeking assistance with the clock ticking on their due dates. Mr. Harmeyer shares his initial frustration, and initial bias when helping the student, but ultimately shares an inspiring information literacy story and lesson for librarians and aspiring librarians alike.

Evaluation - Initially I wasn't sure how a column of this nature would be helpful in understanding information literacy as it relates to librarian jobs, but it is useful for motivating and remembering the job of the information professional. In addition, this post connects to one of my previous posts about students learning to not ask so many questions of their teacher but problem solve on their own.  Mr. Harmeyer empowers a young woman to be able to conduct her own searches with his combination of teaching/training.  His initial perceptions were challenged, by the students confidence and willingness to learn and grow her own literacy, much like the strategy of "no questions" empowers students to solve problems on their own.  After all, information literacy is about providing students with the tools and support they need to problem solve, create meaning for themselves and find success.
