This article talks about feral cats sneaking into libraries and making the libraries their home. In 2006, there were over 200 cats living in public libraries. The calming effect of the feline as well as the publicity having generated by having a library cat, has been welcoming in most libraries. However, due to allergies by patrons and complaints by some board members the count is down to 39 library cats across the country.
As a child I was very lonely and my only solace was books. I can't imagine the joy I would have found if the library had housed a cat as well. This article was a great joy for me to read and emphasized how much an animal can bring to a learning environment. In the past I have read to a dog days in the library. Service dogs are brought to the library and our special education children pet them and read stories with them. The smiles on their faces is priceless. I have brought the service dogs into the library for our general education kids. I had no idea what an effect it would have on them. Our students are going through some horrendous things in their lives that I only hear whispers off. The animals bring a great joy to the library, the students and the school. I wish I could have a library cat. Then this place would be the cat's meow.

THE BUSINESS WORLD AND PUBLIC LIBRARIANS

Alvarez, B. (2017, Jan. & feb.). Embed with Business:Taking your library into the business world. American Libraries, 48(#1/2), 45-48. doi:https://americanlibrariesmagazine.org
In this article it talks about public librarians being embedded in the community, instead of just being a resource that speaks to the community about the services the library provides. They are a resource that works hand in hand with the needs of the business communities. Providing workshops, technology and training that are related specifically to a community's businesses needs. In turn, the library becomes a part of the business community, In as much, "you can expect relationships with the business community to transform from transactional to interactional".
What a great article. I started receiving this magazine shortly after becoming a member in the ALA. However, this is the first time I have been able to read it and it was solely do to this class. I love that fact that librarians found it important to become apart of the community instead of waiting for the community to come to them. In this way the integrated themselves within the community and were no longer considered a separate part. The librarians became a part of council meetings, and were proactive in supporting "projects, events, and platforms that directly serve the community". One needs to be able to think outside the box and have management and administrative support in order to be able to succeed in such an amazing endeavor.

COMMON CORE = $ SCAM???

In this article, Marc Aronson who is a lecturer at Rutgers University, speaks of the feedback he has received from both publishers and educators regarding how common core standards is nothing but money maker for publishers. He continues with how unprepared high school seniors are for college and gives statistical data to prove his point. Also that the standards are not the problem but "economic inequality". "If more students had more resources (social, emotional, financial, cultural, and technological), more would be ready to meet the challenges and opportunities that follow secondary education. Common core standards were created to help students master a level of skills that we help them deal with real world expectations.
Not being a classroom teacher and not having to teach to the common core, I cannot really give my opinion based on experience. However, having worked with educators I have seen the frustration that they have in trying to teach students standards that they are unprepared for. Low reading scores, different learning styles and home situations make it frustrating for both students and educators to learn. I don't know if the common core standards are helping or not, but the feedback I am receiving is that they are not and it is indeed another money maker for politicians, publishers and another way to keep are kids dumb.

Academic libraries are finding ways of becoming more relevant in the 21st century. With technology and online resources, such as eBooks, open access and digital collections, a librarian needs to understand the challenges and develop into a more flexible resource for their customers. This article discusses the top 10 challenges academic librarians face and helps to offer some insight as to what others are doing to overcome these challenges.
This article is straightforward, to the point, and a quick read. It outlines the 10 most challenges facing academic libraries and what some are doing to move forward to help overcome these challenges. It reiterates what I have been learning in the MLIS program at San Jose State and gives statistics and data on how different age levels learn differently and what we as librarians can do to accommodate them.

21ST CENTURY LEARNING COMMONS

7 Things You Should Know About The Modern Learning Commons. (2011, April). Retrieved
March 13, 2017, from https://net.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/eli7071
This article talks about the 21st century learning commons or a space previously know as the library. The library now incorporates research, a place for projects and support from specialists for special services such as computer graphics. The atmosphere is more relaxed with flexible seating arrangements, makerspace equipment as well as video and screening rooms.
This article was short and to the point. It was my first exposure to how a school library can be transformed. Since then I have transformed my school library to a learning commons area. Something the district and had never seen or heard of before.

GAMING AND LEARNING COMMONS

Articles and Blog Posts about Makerspaces in Public Libraries. Library Quarterly: Information, Community,86(3), 313-329. Retrieved March 13, 2017, from https://www.jstor.org/journal/libraryq.
This article talks about the history of the DIY movement which led to makerspaces being incorporated into public libraries, so that all people not just "privileged hobbyists," could have access to entrepreneurship, learning new crafts and community involvement.
This is an interesting article and one I have held on to. It talks about the punk movement as well as, MIT hackers and gaming and how these three components have led to the current makerspace movement we see today. In working with teenagers, there is always a "hook" that I am looking for in getting them interested in coming to the library. The biggest "hook" is gaming and the competition and level of skill needed to participate. In creating a small makerspace in my current library gaming is a central part of the students interest and what brings them in. Some have come back to read books, make puzzles or create a piece of artwork. But its the gaming aspect that brings them into the space in the first place.

Constructivism as a Paradigm for Teaching and Learning
Hudson, Evelyn
Educational Broadcasting Corporation. (2004). Workshop: Constructivism as a paradigm for teaching and learning. Retrieved from http://www.thirteen.org/edonline/concept2class/index.html
This short workshop provides an excellent overview of constructivist learning. Different pages explain how it applies to the classroom, the history of the theory, and more. There are expert interviews with teachers for those who prefer a more visual learning experience.
I feel I have a much better understanding of constructivism after reading through this workshop. I really appreciated the real-life examples that made the theory come alive for me. I also like how each topic was on a different page so I didn't feel overwhelmed by the information.
